What Are Signs You Need a Furnace Repair?

If you’ve noticed that your furnace is no longer providing you with warm air, you know that you need repairs as soon as possible. It’s harder to tell when a ‘working’ furnace is in need of a little love and care. Here are some of the most common signs (but not all!) to look out for when you think your furnace may be in distress and in need of repairs.

  • Strange Noises or Smells
As with pretty much anything, if your furnace begins to smell or sound strangely, you’re probably due for repairs. This can come in the form of squealing, banging, popping, hissing, thumping, whistling, groaning, creaking, or rattling. If you smell gas or other distinct odors around the furnace, something isn’t right. The good news is Haffner’s is able to get to the bottom of this mystery and provide you with education, advice, and repairs to get your furnace back up and running properly.
  • High Energy Bills
This one seems like a bit of a no brainer. No one wants to be paying for something unnecessary—that’s like throwing your money out the window! If you notice a sudden increase in your energy bills, this may mean that your furnace is functioning improperly. It may be due to the fact that your older heater is running overtime to deliver sufficient warmth and it’s time for a replacement as your heater shouldn’t be constantly running.
  • Poor Climate Control
What’s the purpose of a furnace if your house isn’t staying heated? This telltale sign means heat may be leaking through your ductwork or your furnace is broken completely. Either way, this means it’s time to call Haffner’s for some much needed support!
  • Poor Air Quality
Your furnace has a large impact on not only temperature, but also indoor air quality. A poorly maintained system can circulate bacteria, allergens, dust, and more with the heated air. As you can guess, this can cause allergic systems, discomfort, illness, and respiratory problems for those in your home. This may mean that your system needs its filter replaced and airways dusted.
  • Discolored Pilot Light
When all is well, your pilot color should be a lightish shade of blue. A yellow or orange light may reveal that you have a ventilation issue in the sense that the gasses are imbalanced and carbon monoxide isn’t dissipating correctly. This needs to be addressed immediately as the release of carbon monoxide is a health hazard.

Oil-Fired Heating System Troubleshooting

As a Haffner’s customer, you will have peace of mind knowing that our service team will respond quickly, at any time of the day or night, in the event of an emergency situation.

Here are some tips and tricks to try before making a service call:

  • Make sure that the oil burner emergency switch is in the ON position.
  • Check the thermostat:
    • If you have a programmable thermostat, check to see if the batteries need to be replaced.
    • Make sure the thermostat is set to “Heat,” and that the temperature is set at least five degrees higher than the room temperature.
  • Check your fuel level to be sure you have oil in your tank.
  • If you have a steam system, make sure there is adequate water in the boiler. If the level is low, add water to reach the recommended level.
  • Press the RESET button ONLY ONCE. If the burner does not start immediately, DO NOT press the button again
  • If the boiler or furnace does not run at all, check for blown or loose fuses or a tripped circuit breaker.

If the burner still does not start, please call our Oil Service department at 866-It-Kicks for 24/7 service. A member of our service team will be dispatched promptly to fix the problem.

NOTE: if your equipment is over 16 years old, or keeps breaking down, it may be time to replace it. For more information on replacing your system, please contact the Oil Service department for a free estimate.

Annual Tune-Ups

Our yearly tune-ups include:

  • Clean fuel pump and check pump pressure
  • Flush oil line
  • Oil motors
  • Inspect filter, above ground lines and connections
  • Replace filter, nozzle, electrodes
  • Inspect, adjust and clean blower and check blower belt
  • On steam systems, clean or replace site glass
  • Flush the low water cut off
  • Check expansion tank and water circulator
  • Test and adjust all burner controls and check all safeties
  • Oil power vent motor if applicable
  • Clean and vacuum furnace or boiler heat exchanger and flue pipe to chimney
  • Efficiency test

Remember that a clean and well-maintained oil-fired heating system is more energy efficient and less likely to break down in the middle of a cold winter night.

To schedule a tune up, please call our Oil Service department at 866-It-Kicks.
